Abstract

The 1924 film Janghwa Hongryeon-jeon is commonly cited as the first film in Korean horror cinema. However, prior to 1960, only around six films could be classified within the horror genre in Korea. These films were produced intermittently, with notable gaps between their production periods, reflecting the sporadic nature of horror film production during that era. While vengeful spirits, familiar monsters in Korean folklore, did appear in these films, they functioned less as the primary agents of fear and more as narrative devices to engage audiences through themes of tragedy and melodrama. In this regard, this study categorizes films featuring female ghosts produced before 1960 as ‘pre-1960 female ghost films’ and aims to reexamine them through the lens of special effects. The modern popular image of the female ghost took shape through the ‘effects of fear’ in ghost stories and their accompanying illustrations, which were influenced by the grotesque culture introduced from Japan in the 1930s. Based on this, since special effects can be seen as the key technology that creates the effects of fear in films, this study examines historical records to explore the types of special effects used in pre-1960 female ghost films to evoke fear. This study provides a critical framework for bridging the temporal gap in Korean horror cinema studies, which have predominantly concentrated on the 1960s, when the genre became established, and the post-1998 era, often considered the new golden age of horror films Furthermore, it presents an alternative approach to existing analytical tendencies that focus heavily on narrative conventions, historical developments, the causes of monsters’ repression, and their modes of existence.
