Abstract

This study examines the chronological distribution and burial patterns of iron ingots (cheoljeong) excavated from the Silla sphere and reconsiders their function and significance. To this end, the definition and typology of iron ingots were first organized, and archaeological materials dating from the mid-third to the sixth century were classified into five chronological phases in order to analyze patterns of change over time. The results show that iron ingots initially appeared mainly in the Gimhae, Busan, and Gyeongju regions, and their distribution expanded into both the Silla central area and local regions during the fifth century. In the Silla sphere, iron ingots were intensively deposited in elite tombs, especially high-status burials, and burial practices changed over time. In particular, burial practices centered on arrangements closely associated with the deceased gradually shifted toward placements around the coffin and stone-platform-related deposits. In contrast, within the Gaya sphere, large-scale deposits are mainly concentrated in certain tomb groups. Previous studies have interpreted iron ingots either as intermediate materials for iron production or as a form of currency. However, the considerable variation in size and form, the lack of standardization, and the diversity of burial contexts make it difficult to regard them as actual currency. Although some examples suggest that iron ingots may have been used as raw materials for iron production, repeated burial practices, such as arrangements beneath the coffin and around the deceased, indicate that symbolic and ritual aspects were also significant. Accordingly, this study argues that iron ingots should be understood as objects with a complex character. They functioned as valuables circulated through a redistributive system while simultaneously embodying apotropaic, prestige-related, and ritual meanings. These findings are expected to contribute to a better understanding of the circulation of iron and the socio-political relationships within the Silla sphere.
