최근 주5일제의 도입과 7차 교육과정에서의 체험학습의 강조로 우리나라에서도 박물관교육이 활성화되고 있으며 박물관교육의 시행을 제도화하려고 하는 움직임마저 생겨나고 있다. 그러나 지금까지 우리나라의 현장에서 박물관교육의 기획과 운영은 다양성보다는 획일화된 경향을 보이고 있다는 지적이 제기되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 박물관교육의 선진국이면서 서로 다른 형태의 역사적 발전을 해 온 미국과 독일의 사례를 연구하여 우리나라에서의 박물관교육의 실천모형과 제도화에 대한 시사점을 도출해보려고 한다. 두 나라의 역사 속에서 시도되어온 박물관교육의 이론적 지향과 박물관교육 실천 모델에 대한 탐구는 제도화를 앞두고 있는 우리나라의 박물관 교육 모델 구축에 많은 함의를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다. 초기 공공박물관의 성립에서부터 최근에 이르기까지 미국과 독일 박물관교육의 철학적 기반, 역사적 전통, 그리고 실천모형을 문헌 분석을 통해 검토해 봄으로써 한국적 상황에 적합한 제도화를 현실화 하는데 단서를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
