Abstract

This study conducts a comparative analysis of South Korean presidents’ perceptions of peace by applying text mining techniques to presidential speeches containing the term “peace” from 1948 to 2022. Presidential speeches serve as official statements that reflect a government’s foreign and security strategies, inter-Korean policy, and value orientations, making them valuable resources for empirically tracking changes in peace discourse over time. The analysis employs frequency analysis, TF-IDF, and text network analysis to identify both commonalities and distinctions among presidents. Results reveal that all presidents share certain core perspectives on peace: emphasizing international cooperation and diplomatic solidarity, striving for unification, linking peace with economic growth and prosperity, prioritizing national security and survival, and underscoring the values of democracy and freedom. However, each president’s perception of peace also reflects the unique domestic and international context of their tenure. For instance, Presidents Syngman Rhee and Park Chung-hee stressed strong anti-communism and military strength, while Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun focused on inter-Korean cooperation and engagement policies. President Moon Jae-in highlighted denuclearization and concrete diplomatic events, such as inter-Korean and U.S.–North Korea summits, as preconditions for peace. The findings indicate that the division of the Korean Peninsula has been the central factor shaping South Korean presidents’ views on peace, while also showing a gradual expansion from traditional security- and economy-centered approaches toward incorporating social stability and quality of life. This study offers a longitudinal perspective on the evolution of South Korea’s peace discourse and provides a foundation for future theoretical and policy discussions.
