Abstract

This study comparatively analyzes the cultivation systems of two philosophical traditions—Confucianism, as represented by the Joseon-era scholar Yulgok Yi I, and Buddhism—by focusing on their core concepts: Ipji (立志, the determination of the will) and Balshim (發心, the arousal of the mind). Both Ipji and Balshim signify a practitioner’s inner moral resolve and practical commitment, serving as the starting point for moral development and ultimate realization. Yulgok’s notion of Ipji extends beyond a mere decision or intention; it is a practical will to realize moral self-perfection and fulfill social responsibility. It connects internal moral awakening with action in the communal sphere. In contrast, the Buddhist concept of Balshim refers to the fundamental resolve to attain enlightenment and save all sentient beings. It functions as the driving force behind the entire course of spiritual practice, guiding the practitioner through self-purification and compassionate action. Balshim forms the mental and spiritual foundation that sustains continuous effort not only for one’s own enlightenment but also for the alleviation of others’ suffering. This study examines how Ipji and Balshim each seek to harmonize inner cultivation with social practice. While Yulgok emphasizes moral autonomy and societal roles through Ipji, Buddhism simultaneously pursues awakening and altruistic action through Balshim and the Bodhisattva path. Although both traditions stress the integration of personal cultivation and ethical responsibility, they differ in philosophical foundations and methods of practice. In conclusion, Ipji and Balshim represent core expressions of practical will in their respective traditions, demonstrating how inner moral effort can be harmonized with outward ethical engagement. This research provides valuable insights into the interaction between ethics and spiritual practice in East Asian thought and contributes to ongoing discussions on the integration of morality and cultivation in contemporary contexts.
