Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the macro-structure of suffix head-words listed in Korean Dictionaries. First, this study presents quantitative data on suffix head-words in each dictionary. For accurate calculations, it examines how suffix head-words are registered in each dictionary. As a result, it identifies the lexicography of each dictionary based on the proportion of suffix head-words. Second, the comparison of the macro-structure of suffixes in each dictionary is conducted by listing the presence and types of suffix head-words. In particular, the study investigates the lexicographical treatment of suffix head-words in each dictionary by focusing on cases that suffixes are registered as other parts of speech. Last, this study propose that the lexicographical treatment of suffix head-words are systematically correlated within the dictionary. If a suffix is not registered as a head-word, complex words should be treated as compound words. However, it is confirmed that some of these complex words are registered as derived words. This pattern indicates that lexicographical relationship between suffix head-words and related complex words has not been fully reflected. This study suggests the need for more consistent lexicographical treatment of suffix head-words and their related complex words.
