Abstract

This paper examines the differences and characteristics in the narra tion of the Hangul and Classical Chinese versions of Saminpilji, with a focus on their descriptions of Europe. Saminpilji is the first world geog raphy textbook in Joseon, written by the American missionary Homer B. Hulbert. Hulbert initially published the book entirely in Hangul, and later, the Uijeongbu Editorial Office(議政府 編史局) compiled a Classical Chinese version based on Hulbert’s Hangul original. However, the Classical Chinese version of Saminpilji holds independent significance in that it is not merely a translation of the Hangul version ; the two editions differ not only in their compilers but also in their content and structure. The Hangul version was authored by Hulbert, who was invited as a teacher to Royal Elite Academy(育英公院), an educational institution es tablished in the 1880s as part of the Joseon government’s modernization efforts. In contrast, the Classical Chinese version was compiled by figures such as Kim Taek-young, a civil servant at the Uijeongbu Editorial Office, which was established under the Gabo Reform regime of 1894. Hulbert identified issues in Joseon’s governance system from a Western perspective and sought to provide students at the Royal Elite Academy with knowledge of a new world beyond the traditional Joseon framework. On the other hand, Kim Taek-young entered government service with the support of the contemporary affair reform force(Shimugaehyeok Seryeok), including key reformists like Kim Hong-jip and Kim Yun-sik, who led the Gabo Reform efforts during the Gungukgimucheo(軍國機務 處) period. This group had a deep trust in Joseon’s cultural and political system and aimed to utilize Western knowledge to address contemporary challenges. As a result, while the overall structure of the Hangul and Classical Chinese versions of Saminpilji remains similar, their detailed content exhibits notable differences. The Hangul version, written by Hulbert as a Royal Elite Academy instructor, includes information about the emerg ing intellectual class and the fundamental knowledge necessary for in ternational trade, which they were expected to lead. In contrast, the Classical Chinese version, compiled by Kim Taek-young who was a civil servant at the Uijeongbu Editorial Office during the Gabo Reform peri od, selectively adapted and reinterpreted the new information from the Hangul version through the lens of Joseon’s reformist officials. For them, the crucial information consisted of a traditional cultural-geographical understanding of Europe and knowledge of new political identities aligned with the turbulent shift in governance systems. The Hangul and Classical Chinese versions of Saminpilji each have distinct characteristics. The Hangul version is significant in that it ex panded access to information beyond the ruling class, laying the foun dation for a new intellectual class. Meanwhile, the Classical Chinese ver sion is meaningful in that it interpreted and adapted international knowledge from Joseon’s perspective, expanding general knowledge for a broad intellectual audience literate in Classical Chinese.
