안예리, 2023, 『사민필지』의 어휘 사용 양상, 어문연구, 200 : 5~33 호머 헐버트가 저술한 『사민필지』는 한문 글쓰기가 주를 이루던 1891년경에 순국문으로 세계지리에 대한 지식을 담아낸 책이다. 헐버트는 ‘士’와 ‘民’이 반드시 알아야 할 근대적 지식을 당대의 일상어로 쉽게 풀어 서술하고자 했다. 이 책이 1900년대 말까지 版을 거듭하며 당대의 대표적인 근대적 지리서로 자리 잡은 것은 이러한 문체적 전략에 힘입은 바 크다. 헐버트는 당시의 일상어로 누구나 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 서술한다는 대원칙을 고수하면서도 일부 새로운 단어를 도입했는데, 외국의 동물이나 식물의 명칭은 音譯하여 외래어로 적되 협주를 달아 그 뜻을 설명하였고 일상어로 정착되지 않았던 한자어를 쓸 때에도 협주로 그 뜻을 풀어주었다. 반면 외국의 기이한 문물이나 특이한 관습, 또는 한국에 없는 제도는 句나 節로 풀어서 서술함으로써 독자들이 낯선 개념을 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 하였다. 이처럼 『사민필지』의 어휘 선택에는 당시 한국인의 입장에서의 이해도나 친숙도가 적극 고려되었으며, 이는 한글 전용과 더불어 이 책의 문체적 특징을 이루는 핵심적 요소였다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 어휘적 분석을 위해 『사민필지』 초판뿐 아니라 개정판과 한역본을 두루 비교하였으며, 19세기 말에 간행된 이중어사전을 참고 자료로 활용하여 『사민필지』에 반영된 일상어와 19세기 말의 어휘 변화에 대해 논의하였다.
Abstract
This study focuses on Saminpilji, a book written by Homer Hulbert in 1891, during a period when most Korean books were published in Classical Chinese. Notably, Saminpilji stands out as it exclusively employs Hangeul, the Korean script. Hulbert aimed to provide modern knowledge accessible to both officials and ordinary people in everyday language. The book continued to be published until the late 1900s, becoming a representative modern knowledge book of the time. Hulbert employed a stylistic strategy that combined the use of everyday language with annotations for clarity. He introduced some new words, transliterating the names of foreign animals and plants from English and providing annotations for their meanings. When he adopted Sino-Korean words unfamiliar to the common people, he added explanatory notes. Additionally, bizarre foreign cultures, unusual customs, or foreign social systems were described in phrases or clauses so that readers could easily understand unfamiliar concepts. Thus, Hulbert selected vocabulary in consideration of the concepts that were familiar or easily understandable to Koreans, which, with the exclusive use of Hangeul, was key to the book’s stylistic characteristics. For this lexical analysis, the first edition of Saminpilji was compared with the revised edition and the Classical Chinese translation, and bilingual dictionaries published at the end of the 19th century were used as references for the everyday words reflected in the book and lexical changes at the end of the 19th century.
