Abstract
The Commentarii Collegii Conimbricensis (Coimbra Commentaries) is an eight-volume series published by the Jesuit University of Coimbra from 1592 to 1606, comprising Aristotelian texts on natural philosophy, ethics, and logic along with scholarly commentaries. The final volumes dealing with Aristotelian logic are particularly regarded as masterworks that systematized major commentaries from the medieval and Renaissance periods. The fact that these commentaries were published nearly contemporaneously with Bacon’s The Advancement of Learning (1605) and Descartes’ Discourse on the Method (1637) holds significant meaning. This demonstrates that this work, inheriting the Scholastic philosophical tradition, maintained substantial influence even during the emergence of modern science and philosophy. Based on this scholarly authority, the Commentarii Collegii Conimbricensis was conveyed to China in the early 17th century through Jesuit missionary activities, alongside approximately 800 other Western academic works. Jesuit missionaries including Vagnone, Sambiasi, Aleni, and Furtado utilized these commentaries as source texts when introducing Aristotelian philosophy to China. This study aims to analyze the historical background, educational system, and publication motivations surrounding the Commentarii Collegii Conimbricensis, thereby illuminating the conveyance process of Western philosophy to Asia. We also examine the relationship between Counter-Reformation movements and missionary strategies to understand the broader context of this intellectual transfer.
