Purpose: In clinical fields, erroneous occlusion alarms of syringe pump occur from time to time, which increase the workload of nurses. In this study, the authors assumed that the mechanical characteristics of the equipped syringe can affect the generation of such erroneous occlusion alarms during the operation of syringe pump, and performed an in vitro evaluation to verify the assumption. Materials and Methods: 120 syringes from three domestic vendors (10 for 50 mL, 10 for 20 mL, 10 for 10 mL, and 10 for 5 mL per each vendor A, B and C) were randomly selected for in vitro experiments. Two operation modes - i.e., free-flow mode and occluson-flow mode - were tested to get the measurements of a load cell attached to the syringe pump driver. Results: In most test conditions, the measurements of the load cell were commonly the highest at syringes from vendor C, and the lowest at syringes from vendor A; exceptively, the measurements at 20 mL syringes from vendor A and B were almost equivalent at occlusion- flow mode. In waveform analysis, low-load syringes showed smooth load pattern during free-flow mode; in contrast, high-load syringes showed fluctuating load pattern during free-flow mode. Conclusion: Experimental results imply that the mechanical characteristics of equipped syringe can affect the generation of erroneous occlusion alarms of syringe pump during operation.
