Abstract

I have discussed the dramatic situation in theater arts through John Austin 's speech act concepts and “effort” of Rudolf Laban. Following Austin's argument that the ultimate goal of performative communication is the inducement and the completion of related behaviors, I have maintained that conflicts and highly-tense emotions arise between speakers and listeners when inappropriate or inadequate behaviors, (“betrayal perlocutionary act”) occur due to performance utterances, which can lead to dramatic situations on the stage. I have suggested Laban 's effort as a methodology for analyzing the aspect of “betrayal perlocutionary act” related to performance utterance. Ultimately, I have sought to demonstrate that the purpose of utterance and listening on the stage is to carry out movements and that we can explore various dramatic situations creatively based on such movements on the stage.
