Abstract

In 1932, Lee Bong-chang’s struggle for independence in Tokyo sounded the alarm against Japanese imperialism and received significant international attention. His struggle, which took place in Tokyo, the heart of imperialism, and targeted the Emperor of Japan, received significant international attention. As a result, the Japanese cabinet had to resign. At the time of Lee Bong-chang’s struggle, the Korean Provisional Government was in a state of stagnation due to internal problems. However, thanks to the continued support of the Korean in Shanghai and the Korean society in America, the Provisional Government’s determination to fight revived, leading to the achievement of Lee Bong-chang’s struggle. Meanwhile, the Korean society in America was going through difficult times due to internal confusion and the economic situation in the United States. Despite this, Korean in America hoped for the emergence of patriots like Chang In-hwan and An Jung-geun. The struggle of Lee Bong-chang at that time quenched the thirst of Korean Americans for independence. Subsequently, when the struggle of Yoon Bong-gil’s occurred, Korean Americans strengthened their support for the Korean Provisional Government while reigniting their desire for independence. When Lee Bong-chang died a martyr in October 1932, the atmosphere of mourning spread not only among the Provisional Government’s people but also throughout the Korean community in American. Two months later, when Yoon Bong-gil died a martyr, a joint memorial service was held for both of them. The deaths of Lee Bong-chang and Yoon Bong-gil paradoxically brought Korean in Americans together and became a turning point in firmly supporting the Korean Provisional Government. The struggle of Lee Bong-chang, which opened the door to the struggle for independence in the 1930s, is especially meaningful in that it was achieved in cooperation with overseas Korean communities, and became a new watershed for the Korean independence movement.
