Abstract
Nammyeong ChoShik(南冥 趙植) instructed his grandson-in-law Donggang Kim U-ong(東岡 金宇顒) to compose a chŏn(傳) on the basis of the Sinmyeongsado (神明舍圖), thereby replacing the conventional diagram–explanation pairing(圖–說) with a diagram–Biography(圖–傳) combination. Focusing on this choice, this article examines the meaning of taking sŏl(說) not as “exegesis” but as “narrative” in the interrelation between Sinmyeongsado and Cheongunjeon(天君傳). By contrasting Toegye Yi Hwang(退溪 李滉)’s Cheonmyeongdo(天命圖) with Sinmyeongsado, it first clarifies that Sinmyeongsado visualizes the human inner world as a city-scene, thereby intuitively conveying doctrines of mind- nature and self-cultivation, but with limited temporal and spatial extensibility and sparse Neo-Confucian terminology. It then shows how Cheongunjeon compensates for these limits by giving the originally static diagram a continuous narrative line from primordial time through enthronement, decline, usurpation, restoration, and return to Heaven, and by constructing a two-tiered Heaven–Earth spatial structure with concrete place names such as Yuin-guk(有人國), Wŏnnu-san(圓顱山), Gyoji(交趾), and Hunghae(凶海), thus three-dimensionally expanding the restricted space of Sinmyeongsado. Within this expanded spatio-temporal frame, the dynamic career of the Cheongun(天君) transforms the static image of the mind(心) into a living mind that undergoes conflict, crisis, and resolution, while the naming of persons, objects, and places makes explicit key Neo-Confucian concepts such as li(理), gyŏng(敬), and ŭi(義), thereby compensating for the theoretical sparseness of Sinmyeongsado. In particular, by raising Baekgwi Ŭi(百揆 義) to a status equal to Jongjae Gyŏng(冢宰 敬), Cheongunjeon narratively consolidates the gyŏng–ŭi(敬–義) axis that structures Nammyŏng–Donggang’s thought. Taken together, Sinmyeongsado and Cheongunjeon exemplify, within sixteenth-century Chosŏn Neo-Confucian diagrammatics and literary history, an alternative trajectory in which philosophical reflection moves “from diagram to narrative” rather than merely “from diagram to exegetical explanation.”
