이 글의 논지는 중요한 종교개혁자 중 한 사람인 칼뱅의 전 생애를 통해 그 의 교육 사역자로서의 정체성이 어떻게 사상적으로 형성되어 왔는지, 그리 고 그것을 교육현장에서 어떻게 실천하였는지를 밝히고자 함에 있다. 칼뱅 은 교회를 섬기는 네 가지 직책들(엡 4:7~11) 중에서 ‘목사’와 ‘교사’에 대한 직분 이해를 그의 저술인 주석서들과 기독교강요를 통해 순차적으로 정리해 나갔다. 이두직분은교회를세우고보전하기위한항존직이며, 그중목사 는 성경을 가르침으로 성도들을 훈련하는 일을, 교사는 복음적 교리를 명확 하게 설명함으로 학생들을 양육하는 일을 하나님으로 부터 맡았다고 보았다. 이러한견해는칼뱅자신이경험한바에의해형성된것이다. 즉, 스트 라스부르그에서 3년간의 프랑스 난민 성도들을 위한 목사직과 그곳 슈트룸 학교에서에서의 주석 강의 경력, 그리고 제네바 시를 개혁하기 위한 교회의 통치와 카테시즘 교육 및 제네바 아카데미 에서 신학 강의가 그의 사상형성, 특히 교육사역에 대한 직분 이해에 실제적인 영향을 미쳤다. 칼뱅은 가톨릭적 잔재가 여전히 남아있었던 그 당시 종교・사회적 정황 속에서 교회에서의 가르치는 책무의 중요성은 물론 그것의 높은 학문적 수준을 강조하였다. 이는 오늘날 우리 후세대들이 본받아야 할 프로테스탄트 정신임에 틀림없다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to discover how the prominent religious reformer, Calvin’s identity as an educational minister formed throughout his entire lifetime, as well as how this identity was practiced in the real-world educational venue. In his exegesis and his work “Christian Institution,” Calvin sequentially elaborated on the offices of the Pastor and the Teacher out of the 4 duties in the Church (Ephesians 4:7~11). His idea was that the Pastor and the Teacher are indispensable offices for the establishment and maintenance of the Church(hence must forever remain and remain unchanged) – the Pastor is delegated with the duty to train the members of the Church by teaching the words of the Bible, whereas the Teacher holds the duty to clearly explain to the students God’s evangelical doctrines. Such ideas of Calvin were formed as a result of his own experiences. The three years Calvin had spent serving as a pastor in the Strasbourg area for French refugees, as a lecturer of commentaries at the Jean Sturm Gymnasium, as well as the time he spent studying ways to reform the city of Geneva through the Church’s establishment of order and education of Catechism, and also his time lecturing theology at the Geneva Academy, have all undoubtedly impacted the way in which his identity (especially as an educational minister) was formed. In times where vestiges of Catholicism were still in remain, Calvin emphasized how important the educational duties of the Church are. He also contended that such duties be honed to academic perfection(to doctorate level). This is the Protestant spirit that us future-generation Christian educators must emulate.
