가족 형태가 다양해지면서 유아기부터 다양한 가족 구성을 가족으로 인식하도록 돕는 것이 중요해졌다. 본 연구는 그림책을 통한 가족 형태 노출과 가족 형태 관련 토의가 유아의 가족 형태인식에 미치는 영향을 각각 분리하여 검증하는 데 목적이 있다. 연구 대상은 서울 소재 유치원과어린이집 여섯 곳에 재원 중인 만 5세 유아 78명이었다. 먼저 유아들의 사전 가족 형태 인식을 조사한 뒤, 유아가 할당된 네 조건에 따라 10회에 걸쳐 그림책 읽기와 토의 활동을 실시하였다. 일부 집단은 친부모-자녀로 구성된 가족만 등장하는 그림책을, 다른 집단은 다양한 가족 형태가 등장하는 그림책을 읽었으며, 그림책 읽기가 끝난 뒤 실시한 토의 주제 또한 다양한 가족 형태 관련또는 가족 형태와 무관한 이야기 줄거리로 나뉘었다. 분석 결과, 유아들의 사전 가족 형태 인식에는 조건 간 차이가 없었으나, 사후에는 다양한 가족 형태가 등장하는 그림책을 읽거나 비전통적가족 형태에 대해 토의한 유아들이 친부모-자녀 가족 형태가 등장하는 그림책을 읽거나 가족 형태와 무관한 줄거리에 대해 토의한 유아들보다 더 많은 가족 형태를 가족으로 인식하였다. 이는그림책을 통한 지속적 노출과 가족 형태에 대한 토의가 각각 유아의 가족 다양성 인식을 증진할수 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
As family structures become increasingly diverse, it is important for children to recognize a variety of family forms from early childhood. This study examined the effects of picture book exposure and discussion on preschoolers’ perceptions of families. A total of 78 five-year-old children from kindergartens and childcare centers in Seoul participated. After assessing their baseline perceptions of family structures, the children were assigned to four conditions and engaged in ten sessions of picture book reading and discussion. In some conditions, children read books depicting only biological parents and children, while in others they read books portraying diverse family structures; Discussions focused either on family structures or on story content unrelated to family structures. Results showed no significant differences across groups at the pretest, but significant differences emerged at the posttest. Children who read books including diverse family structures, as well as those who participated in discussions about family structures, were more likely to recognize a wider range of families as families than their peers in the other conditions. These findings suggest that both consistent exposure to diverse family structures through picture books and discussions about family structures can enhance young children’s understanding and acceptance of family diversity.
