Abstract

Digital storytelling is a multimodal storytelling, consisting of images, music, narration, subtitle, and special effects. In collaborative learning, learners are expected to equally contribute to the learning of other members. This study, by employing sociocultural theory, examines how novices in Japanese language can construct opportunities to learn Japanese language for a learner with higher Japanese proficiency than them in a collaborative digital storytelling project. The participants of this study are 3 Korean learners of Japanese who major in Japanese at a two-year technical college in South Korea; a beginner, a beginner-intermediate, and a highintermediate. The analysis revealed that novice learners (a beginner and a beginner-intermediate) not only receive language assistance from an expert learner but also provide language assistance such as composition organization, appropriate expressions, and vocabulary to an expert while collaboratively developing digital storytelling. The finding also highlighted factors which can enhance the contribution of novices to an expert; having the willingness to actively contribute to the learning of more proficient learners as an equal member in collaborative learning; strategically using their pre-existing knowledge, relevant first hand experiences and learning resources such as online dictionary in a digital storytelling project.
