Abstract
The notion of public theology is characterized by ‘diversity’ and ‘ambiguity’ due to the short history of public theological discourses and the various contexts of each region where public theology is discussed. For this reason, public theologians often argue that it should be expressed in the plural form of public theologies rather than the singular form of public theology. However, despite the diversity and ambiguity, it cannot be denied that public theology has something in common. In this context, Heinrich Bedford-Strohm recently presented six characteristics of public theology, namely, its biblicaltheological profile, its bilingual ability, its inter-disciplinary character, its competency to provide political direction, its prophetic quality, and its inter-contextual nature. This study aims to help understanding of public theology more concretely by analyzing and systematizing these characteristics of public theology found in his various works, and comparing it with the arguments of other theologians.
