Abstract
Until recently, Korean public theology has been predominantly influenced by the methodologies of Western public theology. Western societies have a long history of democratic experience, and Western churches have historically engaged in public life in various forms, thereby shaping the methodologies of public church and public theology. Building on the discussions and methods developed by Western churches and theologians, this study aims to establish a distinctly Korean public theology that is contextually appropriate. To achieve this, the study will explore the relationship between Minjung theology, a prominent Korean theological movement, and public theology. It will critically engage with the foundational principles of Minjung theology to suggest necessary adaptations for public theology. Specifically, the study will outline three defining characteristics of Minjung theology and propose how these can be translated into a framework for public theology. Finally, the study will propose a new direction for Korean public theology and offer practical approaches for its implementation, thereby establishing a contemporary and contextually relevant Korean public theology.
