Abstract

This study examines the patterns of appropriation and decontextualization of mindfulness discourse in both the novel Achtsam morden (2019) by Karsten Dusse and its Netflix adaptation (2024). While mindfulness originates in Buddhist ethics and meditative cultivation aimed at liberation from suffering, it has been recontextualized in late capitalist culture as a technology of psychological healing, self-optimization, and productivity. Drawing on R. Rogers’s typology of cultural appropriation and R. Purser’s critique of McMindfulness, this paper explores how both the novel and the series satirically reveal the neoliberal transformation of spiritual practice. Through comparative textual analysis, the study identifies a fourfold process in which mindfulness is successively decontextualized, instrumentalized, de-ethicized, and commodified. The findings demonstrate that: (1) mindfulness is reduced to a privatized technique of stress control and emotional regulation, exposing the depoliticized nature of contemporary spirituality; (2) the protagonist’s meditative practice is distorted into a mechanism for self-control and moral justification of violence, illustrating the neoliberal ethic of self-management; and (3) by linking meditation with acts of murder, both works dramatize the ethical void created by the commodification of spirituality. The black comedy tone of the narrative underscores how capitalist ideology transforms inner peace into a consumable form of “violent serenity.” Ultimately, this study reinterprets Achtsam morden—in its literary and audiovisual versions—as a cultural text that exposes the ideological contradic- tions of the global mindfulness movement. By integrating Rogers’s theory of cultural appropriation and Purser’s critique of McMindfulness, the paper situates mindfulness discourse within the broader cultural politics of late capitalism and calls for a renewed understanding of meditation as an ethical and communal practice rather than a tool of neoliberal self-optimization.
