Abstract

This study analyzed the poetic elements of form and content found in Jim Jarmusch’s poetic works, Dead Man and Paterson. Jarmusch actively utilizes the connection between literature and film in his work. He maintains a unique cinematic aesthetic through concise visuals and compressed narrative structures. Jarmusch’s distinctive visual style draws on the form and content of poetry among literary genres. He defines the arrangement of shots in his videos as the arrangement of poetic words, utilizing these shots to embody the rhythm, lines, and stanzas of poetry. He then uses montage techniques to create a bookish atmosphere, completing the poetic structure. Within this poetic structure, poetic words organically interact with the author’s figurative expressions to embody the poet’s intended thoughts. The figurative techniques primarily employed here are metaphor, simile, synecdoche, and metonymy. Jim Jarmusch presented metaphorical and allegorical characters in an ambiguous manner to create poetic metaphors in the film, and completed his philosophical worldview by implementing synecdoche and metonymy through their lines and events. As a result of analyzing <Dead Man> and <Paterson> using Director Jarmusch’s method of poetry, the opening scene of <Dead Man> completed repetition and pause using shot arrangement, and rhythm and margin were provided by arranging blank shots to complete the action. Here, the director added emphasized character shots to strengthen the sense of rhythm. The director also completed the poetic form by using the superimposition technique and music that conflicts with the image to create a poetic atmosphere and overtone effects, and then implemented the poetic content through figurative methods. The protagonist Blake of <Dead Man> became a metaphorical figure as the poet William Blake, and Nobody, who plays the role of a guide who saves the protagonist, was analyzed as a simile figure. The titles of the poems that these characters recite, Innocence, Hell, and Eternity, became synecdochal expressions that signify the phase Blake goes through to become a poet. In the end, the protagonist faces a sublime death through the philan- thropy and salvation of the Indians, which is a metonymic expression that embodies the director’s philosophy. In <Paterson>, poetic expressions are repeated, and the director implemented the demonstration by ending the repeated day sequence with a blank, and the repeated shots in each sequence were varied in the Thursday sequence. This rhythm and sense of rhythm were also emphasized by the twin shots that suddenly appear. In <Paterson>, the metaphorical figure is the protagonist, the poet Paterson, and his wife is a simile figure like a guide who gives the poet an identity. When Paterson lost his will to write poetry, the collection of poems, 『Paterson,』, presented by a Japanese poet is synecdochalized as the poet’s nourishment, and thus is used figuratively. The empty white notebook given by the Japanese poet is metonymic as an infinite space where Paterson can complete his self-realization. In this way, analyzing the poetic form and content of <Dead Man> and <Paterson> aims to present an example of artistic perfection and thought through the medial convergence of film and poetry.
