Abstract

This study analyzes the film Happy as Lazzaro (2018) through the lens of liminality, interpreting space not as a neutral backdrop but as a dynamic medium where power, ideology, and ethical dis ruption are inscribed. By tracing the protagonist Lazzaro’s passage through distinct spatial realms—a feudal rural enclave (Inviolata), a capitalist urban setting, and various transitional zones like waste lands and a bank—the research explores how liminal space reveals the continuity of systemic ex ploitation beneath differing social orders. The theoretical framework draws primarily on Victor Turner’s concept of liminality, complemented by Henri Lefebvre’s theory of spatial production and Michel Foucault’s notion of heterotopia. These perspectives together illuminate how spaces in the film function both symbolically and politically. Inviolata operates as a heterotopic illusion of harmony that masks ongoing feudal oppression, while urban space, despite its modern façade, replicates similar forms of marginalization under capitalist logic. The liminal zones—abandoned train stations, decaying ruins, and the climactic bank—emerge as unstable sites where narrative ruptures and boundary crises expose the contradictions of social progress. Through the figure of Lazzaro, a liminal subject estranged from historical, spatial, and ethical norms, the film interrogates the violence embedded in normative systems. His final exclusion from both feudal and capitalist structures underscores the difficulty of integrating innocence or ethical purity within dominant regimes. Ultimately, this study argues that Happy as Lazzaro mobilizes spatial liminality as a cinematic strategy to question the persistence of exploitation and to reveal the ethical potential that arises in spaces of structural and narrative transition.
