Abstract

The purpose of This study analyzes the political significance of the Princess’s room in Oasis by Lee Chang-dong, focusing on oppression and liberation. Using Marc Augé's concept of non-places, the research explores how the room functions as an oppressive space that isolates marginalized subjects. It also examines how the room transforms into a place of emotion and subjectivity through relational practices with others. Initially a space of surveillance and isolation, it gradually shifts after the Princess’s encounter with Jong-du, fostering emotional recovery and self-awareness. This trans- formation demonstrates that space, through relational and emotional practices, can enable liberation. The study critiques Augé’s concept, arguing that non-places can be fluid, not fixed. In the film, the Princess’s room evolves from a non-place of oppression to an ontological place through emotional responses and relationships. The analysis shows how the film visualizes the politics of otherness, par- ticularly through the intersecting identities of disability and gender, revealing the regulation and pow- er dynamics of invisible spaces. The paper also argues that space is not merely a backdrop, but a key element shaping subjectivity, power, and relational practices. Ultimately, Oasis deconstructs the bina- ry of oppression and liberation, highlighting the political potential of space and its appropriation. This study combines non-place theory with feminist spatial analysis to reflect on the ontological re- storation of marginalized subjects, expanding theoretical discussions in spatial theory and film analysis.
