우리는 천연자원을 마음대로 쓰고 공기와 물을 오염시키는 환경 파괴를 윤리적으로 비난한다. 우리는 그런 행동으로 이득을 볼지 모르지만 그것은 미래 세대에게 분명히 자원 고갈이나 기후 위기와 같은 해악이 되기 때문이다. 그러나 파핏이 제기한 비동일성 문제에 따르면 우리가 환경을 파괴하고 자원을 고갈하더라도 누구에게도 해악이 되지 않는다. 그 결과로 생긴 미래 세대는 우리가 환경 파괴를 하지 않는다면 태어날 미래 세대와 동일하지 않기 때문이다. 우리가 환경 파괴의 문제를 자각하고 환경을 보호하게 되면 환경 파괴의 해악을 입는 미래 세대는 더 이상 존재하지 않게 된다. 만약 그렇다면 우리는 미래 세대에게 해악을 끼친 것이 아니며, 환경 파괴는 윤리적으로 비난받을 이유가 없게 된다. 기후 위기는 더 이상 위기가 아닌 것이다. 이 논문은 비동일성 문제를 비판적으로 검토한다. 먼저 Ⅱ장에서 미래 세대와 관련해서 제기된 비동일성 문제뿐만 아니라, 여러 비동일성 문제 사례들을 살펴본다. Ⅲ장에서는 비동일성 문제에 숨어 있는 세 가지 전제를 밝혀낸다. 그러고 나서 Ⅳ장과 Ⅴ장에서 그것들을 각각 비판한다. 이 비판에 따르면 비동일성 문제는 해결되고, 우리의 환경 파괴와 자원 고갈은 비윤리적이라고 비난받아야 한다.
Abstract
We ethically condemn environmental destruction, which is the arbitrary use of natural resources and pollution of air and water. This is because we may benefit from such behavior, but it clearly causes harm to future generations, such as resource depletion or climate crisis. However, according to Parfit's nonidentity problem, even if we destroy the environment and deplete resources, we are not harming anyone. This is because the resulting future generations are not identical to the future generations that would be born if we did not destroy the environment. If we recognize the problem of environmental destruction and protect the environment, there will no longer be future generations that will be harmed by environmental degradation. If this is the case, then we have not harmed future generations, and environmental destruction is not morally reprehensible. The climate crisis would no longer be a crisis. This paper critically examines the nonidentity problem. In Section 2, we examine several examples of nonidentity problems, as well as nonidentity problems raised in relation to future generations. In Section 3, we identify the three premises behind the nonidentity problem. We then criticize each of them in Sections 4 and 5. According to this critique, the nonidentity problem should be solved, and our environmental destruction and resource depletion should be condemned as unethical.
