Abstract
John Rawls's just savings principle is an effective theory for intergenerational justice responding to climate change matters for three reasons. First, Rawls's just savings principle does not face the difficulties posed by Derek Parfit's non-identity problem, which has placed established theories of intergenerational justice in jeopardy. Rawls avoids this because his theory is not identity dependent. Additionally, Rawls's just savings principle avoids Parfit's repugnant conclusion faced by utilitarian theories. Rawls’s theory is impersonal while not maximizing the quality of life from an impartial spectator’s perspective in the utilitarian theorists’ way. His just savings principle does not maximize the quality of life, but instead requires a sufficient level of quality for life. Second, Rawls's just savings principle is theoretically consistent and coherent. Many scholars have criticized Rawls's just savings principle by saying that its motivational assumptions conflict with the mutually disinterested rationality of the parties in the original position and that the parties cannot represent the interests of future generations. I counter this criticizing by saying that its motivational assumptions are based on the parties' reasonableness, rather than their rationality. Moreover, it is logically absurd that future generations, whoever possible persons will be or whatever their interests will be, would attend an original position. Third, I suggest that in practice, Rawls's just savings principle deals with climate change issues effectively. This is because it is feasible in its sufficiency and effective in its continuity because it applies to the basic structure of society. Therefore, I assert that Rawls's just savings principle is an effective theory of intergenerational justice in response to providing a plausible solution to climate change matters.
