비동일성 문제에서 행위 결과주의와 상식 도덕의 충돌: 미래에 존재할 수 있는 사람을 현재 존재하는 사람만큼 도덕적으로 고려해야 하는가?

비동일성 문제에서 행위 결과주의는 상식적으로 그른 행위를 요구한다고 비판받을 수 있다. 행위자의 선택에 따라서 미래에 다른 사람이 존재할 때, 행위자가 현재 존재하는 사람의 삶의 질을 낮춤으로써 미래에 삶의 질이 훨씬 더 높은 사람을 존재하게 할 수 있다고 해보자. 행위 결과주의에서는 더 좋은 결과를 산출하기 위해서 행위자에게 현재 존재하는 사람의 삶의 질을 낮추라고 요구할 것이다. 이와 달리 상식 도덕에 따르면 더 좋은 결과를 산출하기 위해서 현재 존재하는 사람을 수단으로 희생하는 행위는 도덕적으로 그를 것이다. 이때 두 입장의 충돌을 해소할 수 없다면 미래에 존재할 수 있는 사람을 도덕적으로 어떻게 고려해야 하는지를 알 수 없다. 현재 존재하는 사람을 희생해서 미래에 삶의 질이 더 높은 사람을 존재하게 해야 하는가? 비동일성 문제와 무관하게 파핏은 합리적 관점과 도덕적 관점에서 행위 결과주의를 고찰함으로써 두 입장의 충돌을 해소하고자 했다. 본 논문에서는 파핏의 해소책을 비동일성 문제에 적용했을 때 두 입장의 충돌을 완화할 수 있을 뿐 미래에 존재할 수 있는 사람을 도덕적으로 어떻게 고려해야 하는지까지 규명할 수 없다고 주장할 것이다.
Abstract
Act consequentialism and common sense morality conflict in the non-identity problem. Suppose that when different people exist depending on our choice, we can cause someone to exist whose quality of life is much higher than other possible future person by lowering some present person’s quality of life. Act consequentialist requires us to sacrifice the present person to cause the higher quality of life. In contrast, common sense morality tells us that it is wrong to treat the present person as a means to make things go best. If we fail to resolve this conflict, we never know how to consider the possible future people morally. Derek Parfit examines act consequentialism from rational and moral point of view to resolve their conflict. We argue that applying his solution to the non-identity problem, we can reduce the conflict but still we cannot clarify how to consider the possible future people morally.
