Abstract

Although many researches studied the effect of sales promotion, relatively little research has examined the effect of value-added promotion. In this study, we examined the difference between the effects of price-off and value-added promotion and how product knowledge influenced these effects. To compare between two sales promotion, we selected two products with complementary relationship (e.g., photo printer and cartridge) in same price level. The finding revealed that value-added promotion was more effective than price off promotion. More specifically, value-added promotion had more positive influential on purchase intention and product quality than price off promotion in the low knowledge group, whereas there was no difference between value-added promotion and price off promotion in the high knowledge group. This finding indicates that when companies sell both main and complimentary products, value-added promotion is more effective than price off promotion. In addition, value-added promotion is an effective strategy to minimize negative effect of promotion on brand equity.
