Abstract
The database narrative, allowing for various emergent narrative forms, not only has contributed to the innovation of storytelling but also to the production of a critical historiography that challenges the official historiography based on the concept of a linear time. But this narrative form, according to critics such as Fredric Jameson and Azuma Hiroki, causes the decline of the sense of history and the crisis of historicity. This paper theorizes the ways in which the database narrative, despite its inherent tendency to efface historicity discussed by Jameson and Azuma, can serve to restore and enhance the sense of history. For this purpose, I examine Gilles Deleuze's theory of the three syntheses of time and his relevant film-philosophy to see how his distinction between the second and the third synthesis of time and that between the two types of the time-image are crucial to theorizing the historicity of the database narrative. More specifically, I highlight how both the time of the after (or the future) constituted by the third synthesis and its corresponding type of the time-image that is a series of time are crucial to the database narrative's role in forming an incommensurable temporality against the postmodern lack of historicity. As a case study, I closely read Ho Tzu Nyen's The Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia, a computational media work that addresses the multidimensional history of Southeast Asia in a database narrative form, to illustrate how, in the era of digital media that intensifies the decay of historicity, the database narrative can serve to reawaken the sense of history. Although the computer algorithm this work employs runs the risk of consolidating the effacement of historicity by serving as a diagram that controls the selection and the combination of images and words, both the ceaseless changes in the database and the algorithm and the unpredictable differences that may invade the work in the process of constructing a database and executing the algorithm open up a possibility of experiencing the history of Southeast Asia in a new and indeterminate form. In this respect, Ho's work, by resuscitating Southeast Asia's historical experience incommensurable with the West's colonialist one, makes a remarkable contribution to critically rewriting the history of Southeast Asia from a postcolonialist perspective in an increasingly ahistorical digital era.
