시편 120-134편은 시편 120-124(A),125-129(B), 130-134(A’)로 나눌 수 있다.
Abstract
Because of the ambiguous title “Song of Ascents” and the complexity of Psalms 120-134, scholars have sought to discover their prominent unifying features. While many scholars agree that the Zion theme is the main feature that ties the psalms together, Gerald H. Wilson remarks that Psalms 120-134 are “an almost unbroken song of reliance on YHWH alone.” This study concurs with Wilson’s point of unity. It argues that trusting in the LORD alone is the central theme of the Song of Ascents. Further, this paper argues that the destination of the Song of Ascents is not Zion but YHWH himself, who chose to dwell in and bless from Zion. A structural analysis shows that Psalms 120-134 can be divided into three units: 120-124(A), 125-129 (B), and 130-134 (A’). In the first unit (Pss 120-124), a worshiper begins his journey from a place of hostility toward the city of Shalom (Jerusalem), seeking shalom. He has a firm trust that YHWH, the Maker of heaven and earth, would come to his help. The second unit (Pss 125-129) describes the status of shalom, the experience of blessings from Zion in terms of daily life in an agricultural society. It also tells who is qualifies to receive these blessings. “Those who trust in the LORD” are the ones who can enjoy the promised benefits. They are also called the righteous, the good, the upright, and those who fear the LORD. The third unit (Pss 130-134) deals with the problem of sin, which YHWH alone can forgive. The pilgrim realizes his sins and the sins of Israel before the presence of the LORD as he approaches Zion, which leads to complete reliance on the LORD for forgiveness and redemption. The pilgrimage towards YHWH ends with a prayer for the Davidic dynasty and the people of Israel, celebrating the blessings for Israel as a worshipping community and praising the LORD who blesses those who trust and obey him.
