Abstract

In Buddhism, absence of attachment to the object is considered to be a synonym of liberation, the final goal of Buddhist practice, whereas Western psychology, based on the attachment theory, argues that attachment is an importatnt psychological function for a mature person, Despite these differences, psychologists studying the convergence of Buddhism and psychology in recent years have been attempting to connect productively Buddhist theories of attachment and psychological concept of attachment. In this study, I examined the concepts that serve as mediators in the attempt to connect non-attachment (virāga) of Buddhism to the psychological notion of mature person. As a result, the study demonstrate how the integrated research on attachment theory and non-attachment has been developed and the possibility of positive connection between Buddhist non-attachment and psychological attachment through various interpretations of the Buddhist notion of non-attachment.
