Abstract

Consumption value, after being defined in single dimension as an exchange of quality or price of products and services between consumer and marketer has expanded its meaning to symbolic, hedonic, and aesthetic dimensions. Also, in the case of private brand (PB), because of its contrasting characteristic from national brand, there exists the possibility of distinctive priority of subordinate level that constitutes consumption value. This article analyzes and demonstrates how the Zaltman Metaphor-Elicitation Technique (ZMET) can be used in order to create a consumer’s consensus map for Convenience Store (CVS) private brand (PB). In other words, using the visual images that consumers themselves choose as the ones that represent their feeling and deep thought structure, a collective cognitive map for a group of consumers is obtained. For metaphors bring out the consumers’ subconsciousness that could be misrepresented or missed with written language to conscious level, ZMET can contribute in the consumption value research. In this research, such concepts embedded in the consumption of CVS PB and network connectivity of the concepts leading to the elicitation of the link between CVS PB and ultimate goal achieved by its consumption are shown. In short, this research reveals that university students search for an ‘exclusive cultural code of their own’ through CVS PB. In addition, it is demonstrated that the CVS PB shares five collective orientations or themes which are (1) looking for pleasure, (2) pursuing a simple life, (3) finding comfort, (4) maximizing utility value, and (5) being in a transitional state of imbalance. This research also provides the academic and practical implications on which marketing strategies of convenience stores should be established by focusing the outcome of the qualitative analysis obtained using ZMET on the consumer value of CVS PB, new product concept of NPD, and the communication through POP advertising inside convenience stores. First, academically, a variety of consumer values such as pleasure, passion, newness, uniqueness, sharing/empathy, simple life, efficient use of time, ordinary beauty, retro fashion/nostalgia, value for money, reasonableness, convenience, comfort, richness, honesty, trust, fairness, popularity, small indulgence, focus on the substance and others were identified as important ones, which support other scholars’ study on consumer value such as Holbrook, Sheth et al. Second, practically, observation through the NPD perspective supports established theories in terms of success and differentiation of new products, unique product features, cost-related elements, consumer values and others. In addition to when it comes to the POP advertising, this research finds that consumers pay positive attention to the POP materials of celebrities or entertainers who appear on the packages and they even identify the product features with the images of their models, which are in line with the existing theories.
