Abstract

This study presents the results of two kinds of experiments designed to explore the effects of episodic and thematic framing in the social studies texts on the adolescent recipients’ cognitive and emotional response about social problems. Participants were randomly assigned to read texts about the elder’s crime (unfamiliar social problems to participants) and the youth’s school dropouts & runaways(accustomed social problems to participants). Texts employed either episodic or thematic frames. Results showed that (1) The episodic vs. thematic manipulation yielded participants to attribute casual responsibility for the elder’s crime differently. The episodic framing tend to make participants significantly more individualistic casual responsibility than the thematic framing. However, the thematic framing tend to make participants more societal in their casual attributions. (2) The use of either the episodic or the thematic texts frame did not affect participants’ support of whether individuals or government should take action to reduce the elder’s crime rate. (3) Episodic framing group was more emotionally engaging in the negative direction toward the elder criminals compared to thematic framing group. (4) Participants’ emotional involvement at the societal level is higher for the thematic framing group than for the episodic group. (5) This study had been interested in whether the framing effects of the elder’s crime which is unfamiliar to participants were replicated in that of the youth’s school dropouts & runaways accustomed to participants. The effects were not replicated mostly, as expected. I conclude by discussing the educational implications of the above findings in the social studies setting.
