본 연구는 극단주의와 배타적 상대주의가 심화된 현대 한국 사회의 갈등 양상을 해결할 수 있는 사상적 원리를 모색하기 위하여, 전통 사상인 원효의 화쟁론과 정조의 탕평론을 다원적 공존의 원리라는 관점에서 비교·분석한다. 화쟁론은 다양한 불교 경전과 종파 간 대립을 ‘각각의 일리’로 인정하고, 이를 궁극적 근원인 일심(一心)에서 회통시킴으로써 차이를 포괄적으로 조화하는 방식을 제시한다. 이는 초월적·무규정적 성격의 ‘공(空)’을 기반으로 하여 극단적 상대주의를 넘어서는 통합적 다원성의 사상적 모형을 제공한다. 반면 정조의 탕평론은 붕당 갈등을 해소하기 위해 다양한 준론(峻論)의 공론장 경쟁을 허용하되, 황극(皇極)을 규범적 중심축으로 삼아 공정한 판단과 질서 있는 공존을 실현하고자 한 정치철학이다. 탕평론은 절충적 중립이 아니라 의리(義理)에 근거한 분별적 회통을 통해 다원적 조화를 도모한다는 점에서 특색을 지닌다. 두 사상은 모두 다양성과 통합을 동시에 추구하지만, 화쟁론이 무규정적 초월성을, 탕평론이 규범적 중심성을 통해 공존을 가능케 한다는 점에서 차이를 보인다. 이러한 비교 분석은 오늘날 한국 사회가 직면한 배타적 상대주의와 극단적 분열을 극복하는 데 유의미한 사상적 단초를 제공한다.
Abstract
This study examines Wonhyo’s theory of Hwajaeng (和諍) and King Jeongjo’s principle of Tangpyeong (蕩平) from the perspective of pluralistic coexistence, with the aim of identifying philosophical resources capable of addressing the intensifying extremism and exclusive relativism in contemporary Korean society. Hwajaeng acknowledges the “partial validity” inherent in diverse Buddhist scriptures and sectarian doctrines, integrating them through the ultimate foundation of One Mind (Ilsim, 一心). Grounded in the transcendent and indeterminate nature of emptiness (kong, 空), it offers a model of integrative pluralism that avoids the pitfalls of radical relativism. In contrast, Jeongjo’s Tangpyeong philosophy seeks to resolve factional conflict by permitting principled debates among various junron (峻論) while establishing the royal authority of Hwanggeuk as a normative center for fair judgment and ordered coexistence. Tangpyeong emphasizes discriminative harmonization based on moral principle (uiri, 義理), rather than neutral compromise. While both frameworks pursue diversity and unity simultaneously, Hwajaeng relies on transcendental openness, whereas Tangpyeong depends on a normative centrality to enable coexistence. This comparative analysis provides meaningful insights for overcoming exclusive relativism and polarized division in contemporary Korea.
