Abstract
This paper aims to deeply analyze the implications for resolving various ideological conflicts, focusing on the relationship between Wonhyo's Hwajaeng (和 諍, Reconciliation of Conflicts) thought and his Ilsim (一心, One-mind) thought. In particular, it seeks to provide an in-depth analysis of how this connection, especially in relation to the concept of One Mind, contributes to the resolution of diverse ideological conflicts. Furthermore, it had the research goal of deeply discussing how the philosophical methodology of Hwajaeng can lead to enlightenment and contribute to resolving various ideological conflicts in connection with the concept of One-mind. This article has the attempts to elucidate the core of Wonhyo's thought by specifically analyzing how the Hwajaeng is implemented in two dimensions: the philosophical methodology and the theory of the state of levels. In terms of external aspects, Hwajaeng has the meaning of ‘Non-fighting (araṇa)’, which means eliminating various elements of conflict. In terms of internal aspects, it has the meaning of ‘Samādhi’, which means living in a state of peace and purity. Non-fighting and Samadhi are in an inseparable, monistic relationship (araṇa-samādhi). The philosophical foundation of this Hwajaeng lies in One-mind. One-mind encompasses the Gate of Truth and the Gate of Life and Death, and has aspects that are discussed by relying on language, and aspects that are discussed by abandoning language. One-mind has the characteristic of not dichotomously dividing the world of truth and the world of everyday life, truth and falsehood, impurity and purity, subjectivity and objectivity, but rather integrates them into one. Its nature itself has the characteristic of the Original Awakening (本覺) that divinely perceives the world. However, One-mind is not a being with a specific substantial existence, it is merely a name presented hypothetically for the sake of discussion. It helps us realize that One-mind is no different from the Emptiness (空) of the Non-self dimension as presented in the basic doctrine of Buddhism. The Hwajaeng based on this One-mind emphasizes that all phenomena are interdependent, and through this it presents the philosophical possibility of resolving not only conflicts between individuals but also social contradictions.
