Abstract
This study aims to analyze the formation of practical knowledge and initial professional identity as English teachers among 10 preservice elementary teachers who participated in a two-week summer English camp that was framed as a community of practice (CoP). Data were collected from reflective journals written during the camp and from post-camp group interviews, and thematic analysis was conducted. The findings reveal that the participants developed practical knowledge in five key areas: (1) relationship building to alleviate English speaking anxiety, (2) class operations regarding educational dilemmas in English-based game activities, (3) student management for dynamic classroom situations, (4) individualized instruction to address proficiency gaps, and (5) metacognition regarding the teaching profession and self-reflection. Notably, this knowledge formation occurred primarily through reflection on complex challenges and limitations encountered in practice, such as differences in student proficiency, some students’ refusal to participate, and conflicts due to overly competitive students, rather than from successful experiences alone. Encountering and overcoming these difficulties shaped the participants’ English teacher identities, enabling them to (1) reconfirm realistic self-efficacy and career paths, (2) recognize their roles as communication facilitators rather than mere knowledge transmitters, and (3) pursue values of student-centered joyful learning. The findings suggest the importance of CoP-based programs that support preservice teachers in reflecting on and reinterpreting the difficulties they may face in the field, thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice in teacher education.
