정약종의 『쥬교요지』에 대한 국어학적 고찰 ―필사본의 표기와 천주교 관련 어휘의 수용을 중심으로―

본고는 정약종이 지은 최초의 천주교 한글 교리서인『쥬교요지』를 대상으로 하여 국어학적 특징을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본고의 검토는 크게 두 가지로 이루어졌다. 하나는『쥬교요지』의 필사본 표기에 대한 국어학적인 검토이고 다른 하나는『쥬교요지』의 다양한 판본에 나타나는 천주교 관련 어휘의 변화 양상에 관련된 검토이다. 그 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 절두산순교성지 소장 필사본과 한국교회사연구소 소장 필사본의 표기를 검토한 결과 절두산순교성지 필사본이 좀 더 구어에 가까운 표기 특징들을 보이고 있음을 확인하였다.『쥬교요지』의 다양한 판본들에 나타난 천주교 관련 어휘들에 대한 검토 결과, ‘聖神’과 같이 그 의미가 처음에 쓰인 것과는 달라진 어휘도 있었으며 ‘上帝’와 같이 ‘하나님’을 가리키는 용어로 사용되었으나 선교사들에 의해 다시 폐기의 운명을 맞게 된 어휘도 있었다. 또한 일반적인 대상을 지칭하던 어휘나 표현이 한자어를 통해 천주교 어휘로 정착해 가는 경우도 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
This paper aims to research the linguistic characteristics of “Jugyoyoji” which was the first Korean catholic catechism, written by Jeong Yak-jong. The research of this paper is twofold. The first is a Korean linguistic investigation of the orthographic features of the manuscripts of the “Jugyoyoji” and the other is a investigation of the changing aspects of the vocabulary related to Catholicism in various editions of “Jugyoyoji”. In summary, findings are as below. As a result of examining the orthographic features of manuscript owned by The Jeoldusan Martyrs Museum and manuscript owned by The Research Institute for Korean Church History, manuscript owned by The Jeoldusan Martyrs Museum had more characteristics of spoken language. I also tried to examine the vocabulary related to Catholicism in various editions of “Jugyoyoji”. There was a vocabulary that was different from the original meaning of the word, such as ‘聖神(the Holy Spirit)'. And there was also a vocabulary abandoned by missionaries, such as ‘上帝(emperor)' which is used as a term referring to ‘God'. Also, there were vocabularies and expressions that used to refer to a general object became a Catholic vocabulary through a Chinese-character words.
