PRISMA(Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses)

Abstract

This study aims to systematically analyze the literature on the educational use of generative AI in the context of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL). By researching how the use of generative AI impacts SRL, the characteristics of learners who utilize generative AI, the SRL strategies supported by generative AI, and effective teaching and learning strategies incorporating generative AI, this research seeks to explore these facets comprehensively. The study followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines to conduct a systematic literature review, analyzing 24 previous studies conducted both domestically and internationally, focusing on three research questions. The number of analyzed studies increased from 8 in 2023 to 16 by June 2024. The first research question investigated whether the use of generative AI enhances learners' self-regulated learning abilities, with most studies indicating a positive effect. The second research question examined how learners' self-regulated learning abilities affect the learning outcomes of using generative AI, emphasizing that these abilities are key factors influencing learning performance. The third research question focused on strategies to support self-regulated learning within using generative AI, with several effective approaches suggested. These findings are expected to enhance the understanding of the educational use of generative AI, analyze research trends supporting SRL, and provide significant insights for developing and applying SRL strategies using generative AI in educational settings.
