Abstract
This study conducted a scoping review of experimental studies on learner-generative AI collaboration in higher education, aiming to synthesize research trends, experimental designs, and key findings. A systematic search of the Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC databases identified 1,074 articles, of which 17 met the inclusion criteria and were retained for the final analysis. The results indicate a marked increase in experimental research published in 2024 and 2025, with studies conducted across the fields of education, the humanities and social sciences, and medicine. Methodologically, most studies employed mixed-methods designs that integrated quantitative and qualitative data, while also combining traditional statistical analyses with process and network-analytic techniques to capture the dynamics of learner-generative AI collaboration. Across outcomes, positive effects were frequently reported for academic achievement, higher-order thinking, and affective or behavioral factors, although several studies presented non-significant findings or mixed learner perceptions. By grouping dependent variables into cognitive, affective, and behavioral domains and comparing outcome patterns across different collaboration structures, this review provides initial insights into how learner-generative AI collaboration may support or constrain learning. Based on these findings, this study proposes directions for future research and outlines key implications for experimental studies on learner-generative AI collaboration.
