Abstract
This study investigates the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education and explores its effects on learning outcomes and ethical challenges through an integrative review. A total of 52 peer-reviewed articles published between January 2023 and February 2025-including meta-analyses, quasi-experiments, and case studies-were systematically reviewed. Findings indicate that AI-enhanced instruction improves students’ test performance, assignment quality, and learning motivation. Key functions such as automated essay writing, coding support, translation, and summarization facilitate individualized learning. The multimodal capabilities of generative AI-including text, image, and audio synthesis-create novel pedagogical opportunities across disciplines like humanities, engineering, medicine, and the arts. However, ethical concerns are rising regarding AI-generated submissions, real-time cheating, algorithmic bias, and data privacy risks. To address these issues, process-based assessment, AI detection systems, and digital ethics education are critical. Higher education institutions must diversify evaluation methods, enhance instructor oversight, and establish explicit ethical guidelines. Tailoring AI strategies to disciplinary goals and ensuring data transparency will also help prevent misuse. When technological, instructional, and governance frameworks are harmonized, generative AI can serve as a catalyst for transformative innovation in higher education.
