Abstract

This study analyzes political changes in Lebanon based on the premise that "political transformations begin with shifts in the balance of power among political forces." Lebanon has often been described as a mosaic society within the Middle East. This is due to the persistent conflicts between pro-Syrian and anti-Syrian factions, pro-Hezbollah and anti-Hezbollah groups, Maronite Christians and Orthodox Christians, as well as the Shi’a-Sunni divide within Islam. Historically, Lebanon has been a nation strongly influenced by Syria and is part of the Shi’a axis that extends from Iran to Syria and Lebanon. Hezbollah, a key political entity in Lebanese politics, receives significant support from Iran. Furthermore, Lebanon’s Maronite Christians maintain close ties with Israel, while the southern region is deeply intertwined with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Consequently, the political structure in Lebanon is characterized by its diversity and complexity. Throughout its history, Lebanon’s political phenomena have been shaped more by allegiance to specific factions, sects, or religions than by patriotism or loyalty to the state itself. This has resulted in the weakening of the central government and the dominance of private power over public authority. In conclusion, during the state formation process, Lebanon's religious conflicts between Christianity and Islam, its geographical significance in the eastern Mediterranean, the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, and inter-religious and sectarian tensions have underscored the paramount importance of maintaining a balance of power among various political forces. These complex dynamics have contributed to Lebanon being characterized as a failed state.
