Abstract

The rise of the global information and communication technology(ICT) industry has been linked to the process of globalization. The rapid growth of the ICT sector in India has resulted from the availability of a large, low-cost, English-speaking labor pool in India. Due to the different time zones between India and the developed countries like US and UK, most multinational call center jobs in India are performed during night hours. The ‘night shift’ of call centers brings forth gender connotations such as prostitution. For women in India, to be out and about in the middle of the night is generally considered improper and unsafe. In traditional Indian culture, the proper behaviors of the young, middle-class women will contribute to the reputation of their families. The changes in the mobility of urban educated women via the night shift requirement of multinational call center industry may impact the norms of gender in individuals as well as families, and further reshape women’s social status in the lager community. This paper argues that women working in the multinational call centers are implicitly rejecting traditional patterns of family control over daughters, and in doing so they are resisting their subordination. However, this does not mean that call centers jobs make the young daughters working in call centers escape the rigid patriarchal control exercised over young women. In spite of limit of change in the norms of gender in Indian society, women’s mobility during night hours required by multinational call centers continues to reflect the Indian traditional patriarchal framework that is based on the discourses of surveillance and protection of women’s bodies.
