Abstract

From the viewpoint of religious history of India, the most striking feature of the Post-Mauryan Period is the great change in the concept of god. The initial basis for this change was provided by the emergence of bhakti idea, which can be translated into ‘loving devotion’. Many scholars have asserted that the idea of bhakti was derived from the Vedic Religion, because the first systematic exposition of it was given in the Bhagavadgīta. On the other hand, some scholars suggested the Buddhist origin of it. The purpose of this paper is to prove the Buddhist origin by critically analyzing the literary texts related to the systematizing process of the idea of bhakti in both the Vedic religion and Buddhism. Furthermore, through the doctrinal development of the idea of bhakti in these different religious traditions, we can make a reasonable conjecture regarding the issue of precedence, that is, which one was the first to produce the idea of bhakti. Also, the propagation and reflection of this idea on the religious systems and culture of the time are discussed from different angles. As a conclusion, we assert that the idea of bhakti was originated from the changing idea about the Great Master, the Buddha, in Buddhism. In other words, the Buddha was elevated from an ethical teacher to the one who enlightened the Dhamma. This process occurred earlier than the Vedic religion in which the idea of bhakti was first explained systematically in the Bhagavadgīta. Thus, it might be argued that the idea of bhakti was originated from Buddhism, and became popular to spread into other religious traditions with the political changes and the growth of economy during the Post-Mauryan period.
