Abstract
This study examines the cases of dilemma of Sarala Devi focusing on the limitation of new womanhood and gender awareness, and martial national consciousness and spinning wheels. New Womanhood of Sarala Devi can be found in the cases of challenging the limit that was imposed to women such as science classes, songs, and jobs. However, the cases related to marriage revealed the limitations of gender awareness. The first of such is married the person that her parents chose while claiming the right to select her own spouse. The second is to positively accept polygamy on the ground of the traditional idea that women should carry on a family line. However, considering the time period was the late 19th century and the early 20th century, despite such limitations on gender awareness, it can be viewed that pioneering attitude was shown as a new woman. Early of the 1900s, Sarala Devi promoted the martial spirit. In the 1920s, she was in the vanguard of the spinning wheel movement which was led by Gandhi. There is a tendency of comparing these two cases and see them as contradiction or dilemma. That is because they compared the nonviolent spirit of Gandhi and the martial spirit of Sarala Devi. However, Sarala Devi participated in the movement of spinning wheels by following Swadeshi movement rather than the nonviolent spirit of Gandhi. Also, the martial spirit of Sarala Devi stresses strong body and bravery, not vandalism that tries to solve current problems with violence. So, it is not a desirable approach to compare her martial nationalism with Gandhi’ nonviolence. In conclusion, it is more appropriate to see that the swadesh movement of Sarala Devi, which proceeded during the time of claiming martial nationalism, is connected with the movement of spinning wheels by Gandhi.
