Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine Sarala Devi’s vision about women’s movement focused on the foundation of Bharat Stree Mahamandal, practice of Āśrama, and remarks about separating Women’s Congress. Sarala Devi founded Bharat Stree Mahamandal not because she meant to build a organization having different goals from those of women’s organization led by men but because she wanted to form a group dealing with female issues with women being the subjects of it. She had the idea that women should be able to enter the life stage of Vānaprastha and Sannyāsa without her husband’s consent. She had practiced this idea and stressed women’s autonomous rights for making decisions in life. Through these activities, she revealed her vision that women’s rights of self-determination should be established not only in social or political aspects but mentally, too. In 1931, Sarala Devi insisted that Women’s Congress should be separated from Indian National Congress. It was not to present her radical feminist consciousness against men but to raise her objection to Indian National Congress. Because Indian National Congress did not give the right of the making laws and decisions to women even though they were mobilized and participated in Civil Disobedience Movement. To sum up, the reasons why she claimed Women’s Congress are as follows: Indian National Congress excluded women in the Congress Working Committee and the right of the making laws. She also wanted to ensure women's decision-making right in the political sphere. Therefore, Sarala Devi’s vision, shown through the foundation of the Bharat Stree Mahamandal, practice of Āśrama, and insistence about the separation of Women’s Congress, should be regarded as independent women’s movement ‘by the women and for the women.’
