Abstract

This paper examines New Women’s emergence in colonial India during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The primary objective is to highlight the significant role played by social reformers and organizations in empowering Indian women and bringing about societal changes. The research method employed involves analyzing various articles and publications from that period aimed at suppressing Indian women and those promoting feminism. The research focuses on the rise of the ‘new woman’ in colonial India, a movement led by scholars, writers and social reformers. It also explores the influential role of journals in the formation of women’s organizations by the end of the 19th century and in addressing important issues such as women’s education, widow remarriage, child marriage, and polygamy. This research’s findings highlight Christian missionaries’ pioneering efforts as the primary advocates and promoters of female education during the colonial era.
