Abstract

By examining the New Woman phenomena in England, Japan, and Colonial India, China from a point of the historical contexts, this paper attempts to find diversity and structural differences of the phenomena which appeared in all parts of the world in the late 19th to early 20th century. Though the New Woman phenomena had in common with a background of feminist movement and new middle class women, in each society they differed from an influence as social groups, a direct moment of the appearance, a hegemonic group, a meaning of the signifier and a debate. The differences resulted from structural condition in western vs. non-western, empire vs. colonial society. In India and China in which have a standard of education lower than England and Japan, the 'New Woman' signifier meant vaguely a feminist or feminist movement. And whereas in the former male intellectuals were those who led the production of new woman discourses, in the latter female writers were. The new woman in non-western societies was less a challenge to “masculinity” and male power than a space for debates where contentions over savageness vs. civilization and tradition vs. foreign cultures(the West) took place. This suggests that it needs to approach to the New Woman phenomenon in colonial Korea with a problematic of colonial difference
