Abstract
Amir Khusrau created epic poems praising the king's achievement and Sufi poems expressing love for gods in Persian, the language of the ruling class in his period in a beautiful style of writing. Known as the first Khari Boli Hindi poet in the history of Hindi literature, he also wrote poems in Hindi for the people, going beyond the political and religious ideology of Persian poems. In this article the popularity of Hindi poetry by Amir Khusrau is to analyze the popularity reflected in Hindi poems from Khusrau in various aspects including poetic words, topics, and forms. Although ‘popular literature’ is generally known as substandard and common literature for attracting interest of the people, this article focused on the people as a class enjoying poetry and investigated the characteristics of the people and popularity of his Hindi poems. Back then, Hindi was a regional dialect widely used in Northern India, Khusrau pursued his own unique form of poems in Hindi for people who could not read Persian. He employed the format of word-of-mouth riddles to write 『paheliyaṁ』, 『keh-mukriyaṁ』 etc. Being a part of oral literature, riddles were popular and enjoyed by lower classes. Composed with a question and answer format and encouraging participation by both the speaker and listeners, riddles included languages or subjects truly familiar with the people and were closely related to their lives. Hindi poets by Khusrau were written not only in Hindi but also commonly used languages such as Persian, Arabic and Turkish and contained musical and entertaining factors with metaphors and ambiguous expressions. He sometimes used wordly or common materials to attract interest from the people. Although his Hindi poems did not have diret influence on literature of the next generation, they can be considered significant in having developed the opportunity for the people to become a class enjoying literature.
