쁘렘짠드(1880-1936년)가 창작 활동을 하던 시절은 식민지배 시기였고, 그 당시에도 물론 힌두-무슬림 간의 종파 갈등 문제가 존재하고 있었다. 이에 본고는 인도에서의 힌두-무슬림 갈등과 분열을 살펴보기 위한 방편으로 인본주의 작가인 쁘렘짠드의 소설을 분석하고자 한다. 힌두-무슬림 관계를 다룬 그의 대표적인 단편소설을 통해 당시 이에 대한 시대정신과 그의 작가적 상황인식을 알아보고자 하는 것이다. 문학작품을 통한 종파주의에 대한 연구는 기존의 사회과학적 연구에서 배제되었던 개인의 내면적 세계를 이해할 수 있다는 점에서 또 다른 의미를 갖는다고 하겠다. 이에 대한 분석의 틀로 힌두-무슬림이 갈등하게 되는 심리적 고착화 현상, 심리적 경직화 과정을 설정함과 동시에 결과적으로 쁘렘짠드는 힌두-무슬림 관계의 조화와 융합을 위해 어떤 의식과 의지를 갖고 있었는지에 대해 살펴본다.이에 대한 분석의 대상으로 종파문제와 관련된 쁘렘짠드의 단편소설 중에서 이슬람교의 강제적인 전파를 다룬 『지하드』(Jihd), 힌두와 무슬림 간에 폭력에 의한 강제 개종을 다룬 『폭력은 최고의 종교』(His Parmo Dharma; 1926), 종파적 화합을 다룬 『노예 해방금』(Muktidhan; 1924), 『신의 음성』攀*이 연구는 2006학년도 한국외국어대학교 교내학술연구비의 지원에 의해 이루어진 것임
Abstract
This paper aims to study Hindu-Muslim conflicts by referring to the Premchand's short stories - Jihād, Hiṁsā Parmo Dharma, Muktidhan, Paṅc Parmeśvar, Dekrī ke Rupaye, Īdgāh. I think the analysis of the literary work may help us understand personal inner responses and attitudes to communal conflicts. Premchand stood for communal harmony. He was born in a Kayastha family. Kayastha were a class of scribes who held clerical, administrative and other posts in the Mughal court and thus came to acquire a hybrid culture and a broad outlook. Premchand was under the influence of Arya Samaj. But he imbibed its spirit for social reforms and changing decadent practices, not its anti-Muslim bias. Premchand opposed the Shuddhi movement. With his view point, This movement had taken a political turn and was obviously against the spirit of Hindu-Muslim unity. Premchand was a ruthless critic of exploitation in the name of religion. Premchand certainly desired to enhance understanding between Hindus and Muslims through the medium of his writings. His short stories like Muktidhan, Paṅc Parmeśvar, Dekrī ke Rupaye, Īdgāh tried to remove misunderstanding often found among Hindus about Muslims.
