인도의 종파갈등 현상에 대하여 문학작품의 분석을 통해 접근하는데 이 글의 목적이 있다. 문학작품을 통한 연구는 무엇보다 기존의 사회학적 연구가 소홀히 해왔던 개인의 내면적 태도와 반응을 이해할 수 있다는 장점을 가진다. 소설 『아자디』에 나오는 힌두 주인공 랄라 깐시 람을 중심으로 인도와 파키스탄이 영국으로부터 분리 독립되면서 발생한 힌두와 무슬림 간의 종파갈등을 겪은 등장인물들의 경험을 분석한다. 사회상황의 변화 속에서 등장인물들이 보여주는 심리적 반응과 행동을 분석함으로써 종파갈등에서 나타나는 보편적인 심리적 특성들을 찾아본다. 또한 당시 인도의 정치사회적 모순이 일개인에게 초래한 내면 세계의 변화를 추적한다.
Abstract
This paper aims to study communalism by referring to a literary work. The analysis of a literary work may help us understand personal inner responses and attitudes to communalism. It deals with the personal experiences of the characters in the novel Azadi, especially focusing on the hero, Lala Kanshi Ram. They were Hindus who lived at the small city of Pakistan, Sialkot, located near to the Indo-Pakistan boundary and had to undergo communal conflicts between Hindu and Muslim, which occurred after India and Pakistan each got independence from the British. It tries to find out general psychological characteristics appearing under the circumstances of communal conflicts by analysing the behaviors and psychological experiences of the characters depicted in the novel. It also talks about the changes of the inner world of the characters brought about by the then socio-political conflicts.
