쁘렘짠드의 달리뜨에 대한 ‘사실성’ 인식 고찰

쁘렘짠드는 당시에도 만연해있는 엄격한 위계질서의 모순된 사회제도에서 상위 지배계급에 ‘짓밟히고 소외되고 억압받고 버림받은 자’들의 리얼리티를 소설에서 구현하고자 시도한 작가이다. 그는 달리뜨들의 희망과 절망, 분노와 초연, 인내와 용기 등의 감정적 정서와 사회현실을 사실주의 기법으로 묘사하였다. 진보적 성향의 사실주의 작가 쁘렘짠드는 역사적으로 영국 식민지 지배하에, 문화적으로 전통적인 가치가 무너지고, 사회적으로 하층민들의 일상적인 삶이 완전히 붕괴된 모순사회의 실상을 자신의 소설에 그대로 반영하려고 노력했다. 당대 온갖 문제에 깊은 관심을 가진 쁘렘짠드는 전통사회의 악습과 폐단 그리고 현실사회의 구조적 모순을 파헤치면서 인간의 자아를 성찰하였다. 그의 소설 「타꾸르의 우물」에서 여주인공 강기 그리고 「수의」에서 주인공 기수와 마다브는 하층민들의 비참한 삶의 현장을 묵도하며 살아가는 자들로서 불합리하고 모순된 사회구조를 누구보다 잘 인식하고 있다. 이들은 쁘렘짠드가 대중의 의식을 일깨워주기 위해 창조한 인물들이다. 그러므로 쁘렘짠드의 달리뜨 소설은 달리뜨들의 실제적 삶을 바탕에 둔, 현실인식이라는 문제의식 제기가 기저를 이루고 있다.
Abstract
Premchand had constantly advocated through his short storys that the reality which is not mediated by human beings is meaningless itself, so the most important thing is the human-self that mediates reality. Therefore, since a sense of ‘reality’ is always present in the short storys of Premchand, as a method to reproduce reality, through this study I examine how Premchand expresses his critical mind. It also means that I examine the correspondence which is considered the exactness of reflection between the image and social historical phenomena in Premchand’s short story. The word ‘reality’ itself is too broad, so reality in literature can be secured transferring generally given a social phenomenon. To prove this, in this paper I examine Dalit characters’ confession, psychological conflicts and daily lives in Premchand’s short stories. I also examine the new self-recognition process for the abundant and diverse understanding of humanity and reality in the short storys of Premchand by devising research method which observes Dalit characters from the inside.
