이 연구는 쁘렘짠드의 힌두교에 대한 시각이 가장 잘 드러난 단편소설『람릴라』를 통해 그의 힌두교에 대한 인식을 구체적으로 분석 연구하는 것이다. 즉, 이 연구는 쁘렘짠드의 도덕적 종교관으로서 그의 문학세계 중에서 힌두교에 대한 연구이다. 힌두로 태어나 이슬람 문화와 정서에 친숙해 있던 쁘렘짠드는 힌두교의 악습과 폐해에 저항한 대표적인 사실주의 작가이다. 이 소설 역시 제목 그대로 힌두교의 람릴라 축제를 소재로 하고 있다. 그러나 이 소설은 힌두교의 내면적 성찰이나 사유를 다루지 않는다. 무신론자인 작가는 힌두교의 부정적인 관행과 악습을 쇄신하기 위해 현실에 순응하거나 이와 타협하려 하지 않았다. 쁘렘짠드가 근대와 서구적 가치에 의미를 더욱 부여함으로써 힌두교적 전통과 대립하며 이에 대해 비판적인 입장을 취할 수 있었던 것은 가문의 환경, 마르크스 사상의 영향 그리고 과감한 용기에 기인한다. 이 소설은 어린 시절에 겪었던 ‘나’의 체험의 세계이며, ‘나’의 체험담은 해맑은 소년의 시선을 통해 힌두 사회문화 체제의 부정적인 면을 들여다봄으로써 타성에 젖어있는 힌두들에게 자신들을 성찰하라는 메시지를 담고 있다. 소설의 주제는 종교적 헌신과 관련한 믿음에 대한 모순 그리고 종교적 믿음을 개인의 이기적인 욕망으로 이끌어가는 위선자들의 정서와 현실에 대한 고발이다. 이 소설의 기본구도는 화자인 ‘나’의 람릴라 축제에 대한 순수한 믿음과 열정에서 출발해 평범하고 순박한 삶을 저해하는 정치·사회적 메커니즘에 대한 저항, 힌두교 사제 그리고 경찰 같은 위선자들의 천박한 부정행위, 순수한 인간들의 이상세계를 회복하려는 휴머니즘의 의식의 흐름으로 이루어져 있다. 결국 쁘렘짠드가 천착하고 있는 것은 순수한 개인의 삶을 위협하는 힌두 전통사회의 구조적 모순과 한계 상황 그리고 사회 지배 계층의 위선적 행위에 대한 환멸이다. 쁘렘짠드는 『람릴라』소설에서 힌두교의 강압적인 신앙행위, 비이성적인 맹종, 비인간적인 행태 등을 질타하면서 힌두 사회가 정의와 법을 회복하도록 희망의 길을 열어 놓았다.
Abstract
This paper examines Premchand's perception of Hinduism through the study of his short story Ramleela which shows his point of view on Hinduism specifically. That is, the study of Hinduism as the moral religious viewpoint in his literary world. Premchand is regarded as one of the foremost realist writers whose works are good examples of the resistance against bad habits and indictments of Hinduism. While born in Hindu family, he was well acquainted with Islamic culture and sentiment. Premchand's hindi short story Ramleela is about a Hindu festival named Ramleela. However, the story does not consist of the introspection or ethical contemplation of Hinduism. The author, who is an atheist, is never willing to adapt to the reality. He, rather, attempts to break down the bad practices of Hinduism through work activities. He gave consequence to the modern and Western values and resisted against the Hindu tradition. This critical stance of Premchand on the customs of Hinduism results from his family background, the influence of Marxism, and his personality - great courage and determination. This story describes the world of "my" childhood experiences. The experiences includes the message that makes Hindu peoples stuck in a rut introspect through the perspective of an innocent boy to the negative aspects of the structure of Hindu society. Report of the faith in religious devotion full of contradictions, the lies of hypocrites who guide the faithful by their own interests is a main theme of this short story. The story starts with childlike passion and belief on Ramleela festival of the narrator - "I", then it reports the social and political mechanism that hinders the normal, happy life of ordinary people, the fraudulent act of Hindu priests or governmental authority. The story concludes with the attempts to fight back against those bad habits and regain the ideal world of pure human existences. Ultimately, the issues Premchand delve deeper into are the organizational contradiction and critical situation of the traditional Hindu society which threats the life of innocent individuals and the disillusionment of the hypocrisy of the ruing caste. Premchand has, in his short story Ramleela, paved the way for the course of justice in Hindu society by denouncing oppressive religious-deeds, blind obedience, and inhumane conducts of Hinduism.
